Conjugated proteins

Peptide-protein conjugates are used to generate antibodies against peptides. Since peptides alone are often too small to trigger a sufficient immune response, carrier proteins containing multiple epitopes are employed to stimulate helper T cells, which subsequently facilitate the induction of B cell responses.

The immune system reacts to the peptide-protein conjugate as a whole; therefore, some antibodies will always be generated against the peptide, the linker, and the carrier protein. For this reason, it is important to use a conjugate during immunization that differs from those that may be used in the final assays.
