Hormonal metabolism

Hormones are small regulatory signaling molecules secreted by endocrine glands. These molecules travel through the bloodstream and can influence other cell types to act in a specific manner, even at very low concentrations. Hormones play key roles in regulating growth, development, metabolism, reproduction, mood, sleep, stress, and many other bodily functions. While they are primarily protein-based, there are also lipid-based hormones.

Hormones are essential for the proper functioning of living organisms. This is why there are metabolic pathways dedicated to maintaining a balance of circulating hormones. These molecules are automatically regulated through positive and negative feedback systems. However, alterations in the metabolic systems that control their concentration can lead to hormonal diseases, such as hypothyroidism, diabetes mellitus, Cushing’s disease, or polycystic ovary syndrome, among others. This is why there is great interest in understanding the pathways and metabolic mechanisms associated with hormones and their alterations in pathological conditions.
