Cytokines constitute a large family of soluble low molecular weight proteins and glycoproteins, whose primary function is cellular communication in immune and inflammatory responses. They also act as growth factors. These molecules are secreted by different cell types and tissues, with macrophages and T lymphocytes being the largest producers. Upon secretion, cytokines bind to cellular receptors in a highly specific manner, generating cellular signaling cascades that alter the function of the secreting cell itself (autocrine action) or other cells (endocrine and paracrine actions).
