Autoimmunity

Autoimmunity is a complex phenomenon in which the immune system of the body reacts against its own cells and tissues. This abnormal immune response arises when the mechanisms of tolerance toward the body’s own components fail, leading to the activation of autoreactive lymphocytes. Autoimmunity can be triggered by a combination of genetic, environmental factors and changes in the homeostasis of the organism.

The study of autoimmunity has made significant advances in recent years, thanks to progress in methods for analyzing the immune response. These advances have contributed to a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms of autoimmunity and have enabled the identification of key signaling pathways involved in the development of autoimmune diseases. In this way, potential therapeutic targets for the treatment of these diseases have been identified.
